Children's Online Privacy Protection Rule (COPPA)

Issued and enforced by the Federal Trade Commission since 2000

PurposeCOPPA puts parents in control of what information commercial websites collect from their children online. It mainly applies to operator's of websites and online services directed at (or used by) children.

RequirementsCOPPA requires that these websites, that have "actual knowledge", that they are collecting information from children to post privacy policy policies and provide parental notice and get veriable consent before collecting information. Hence, the growth of sites like Glogster EDU and Prezi EDU. These were web 2.0 tools created for general, but historically used by educators and minors. Therefore they developed a separate sites designe for classroom use with compliance to COPPA.

For example...When our students access Discovery Education for the first time they will see this message.

When logging into to Student Center for 1st time...



If a student is under the age of 13 they will need to enter a their parent's email address or bring home a letter for parental permission. If a student has a parent's email address, the parent will receive from Discovery Education stating their privacy policy.
